My prayer life needs help and I assume yours need it too.
I have been trying to stay afloat and created margins that give me enough time to spend with God.
It can be very tough.
I encourage myself to PRAY MORE but I am sure you have heard that before so many times too with little or no change.
So pray more probably doesn’t work for most people.
Today, we’ll look at some reasons why Christians don’t pray.
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14)
I believe this scripture has the hidden reasons we struggle to pray. When people read this verse, it almost sounds like we have chosen to ‘just not pray’. It is like we are a rebellious set of people, consciously kicking against a God command. Even worse it almost sounds l like we don’t want healing or blessings in our land.
But we both know that is not true. More than ever we want God to heal our land, bless us, and manifest His glory in our lives, our careers, our business, our families, our cities and in our nations.
We need God, and more than ever, we want to pray….. but we just don’t do it enough.
1.) We are not sure if we truly belong to God or are called by his name. – When you doubt your salvation, you will find praying very difficult. The basis of our salvation is Faith in God! If you are not sure your dad is truly your dad, you will find it difficult to relate with him. You are God’s child once you have accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour. You are now part of God’s people that he listens to.
So if you are here and you are not sure you are saved i.e born again. Then I will like to speak with you. Let’s have a chat, send me a mail on firstname.lastname@example.org
Without this basic foundation, your prayer life will never take off. (No one can please God without faith. Whoever goes to God must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who seek him – Hebrews 11:6)
2.) Pride – It is difficult to engage in prayer with a proud heart. God made it very clear that you need humility. Let me make it simple to understand. When you are not humble, you will assume some issues don’t require God’s intervention, so you refuse to take them to God. As long as you don’t have a MAJOR problem, pride says you can still handle them. Then you find yourself slacking in prayer waiting for a major issue to take to God forgetting that prayer is building a relationship with God. God is interested in EVERY area of your life, not just some. What clothe to wear? (check), What route to take? (check) What decisions to make? (check). When you consciously stay humble, your prayer life will improve.
3.) Turn from Wicked Ways – When in sin, it is extremely difficult to pray. But the major culprit isn’t sin itself, it is guilt. The devil uses guilt to ensure that you stay away from praying.
While you were a sinner, Jesus came to die for you! Romans 5:8 (Read that again 7 times or more till you understand it). God did not wait for you to be holy or righteous or clean before He sent His son. While you were very bad and at your worst, Jesus died for you. So what makes you think he doesn’t want you now or that he won’t accept you now. It is a lie of the devil. God hates sin but loves you so much he is willing to welcome you with open arms. When the prodigal son came home, the father threw a PARTY!
Eventually when you know more of God you will sin less, till that time stay with God in prayer (It is the way to know him more)
4.) Not Praying and Seeking – That bible verse clearly states Pray and Seek my Face. If you get all 3 above right, then you still have to create the time and discipline to open your mouth and pray. When you struggle to pray, ensure you have a safe net to help you get back up.
- Go to church.
- Attend group prayer meetings. It will help you to get back on track.
- Listen to well written Christian music. They are prayerful and have a way of connecting you back to God. I love Hillsong music. Here’s one I am digging right now
- Tell a Christian friend you trust and pray together even on phone or BB or WhatsApp.
