We live in a society where DIY (Do It Yourself) is becoming a major part of our lives. Admittedly it has its advantages and the ingenious manufacturers that break once complicated arrangements into something anybody can put together and arrange should be applauded for their work. Some DIY even encourage team work.

The newest thing round the block now is OYO (On Your Own). We are growing increasingly intolerant of each other and going alone is now celebrated.

But in our “alone” journey through the dark places of life, fear has crippled many of us. We start out with so much courage, but somewhere along the line, we become fidgety, shaky, hopeless, and a former shadow of ourselves.

The change I am talking about can be summed up in these words.

At the start when we are full of courage we say “I WILL …..”, but somewhere along the line it changes to “WHAT IF….”

“I WILL START MY OWN BUSINESS” ……. “WHAT IF THIS BUSINESS FAILS”

“I WILL MAKE IT”……. “WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE WHAT IT TAKES”

“I WILL BE A GOOD HUSBAND” ……… “WHAT IF THIS MARRIAGE IS NOT FOR ME”

“I WILL BE A GREAT WIFE” …….. “WHAT IF I HAD WASTED MY EARLY YEARS”

“I WILL GET A JOB”…….. “WHAT IF I CAN’T GET A JOB IN THIS ECONOMY”

“I WILL GET A HOUSE” ….. “WHAT IF I LOOSE MY HOUSE”

“I will ……” but “what if ….”

And like many people, I have my own “I wills”, but many times I am faced with the “What ifs”.

The “I will…” “What if…” combination now ends in “I can’t…”

I can’t make my marriage work.

I can’t run this business successfully.

I can’t repair my relationship.

I can’t stop being a failure.

I can’t find a job in this economy.

I can’t ……….

Despite our hope, belief and faith, we still constantly make the “I will…” “What if…” “I can’t…”statements. It is at this point that I should say don’t talk yourself down, don’t talk yourself out, tell yourself YES I CAN!… but I won’t say that, because truly YOU CAN’T.

In Numbers 13, the 10 spies were right when they said:

“We can’t go up against them, they are stronger than we are”.

But they missed the truth entirely.

The truth is, God never intended for them to go it alone!

In Exodus 6: 6-8 God said these things to them:

I am the Lord

I will bring you out

I will rescue you

I will redeem you

I will take you as my people

I will be your God

I will give you your inheritance

WHAOOOO!!!! God said He will do all that.

God never intended for you to live through the challenges of life alone!

There is a very long list of what you can’t do, and instead of being afraid and feeling like a failure, just  acknowledge that there are giants you can’t fight, there are systems you can’t overturn, there are relationships you can’t restore, there are things you can’t do, but God can.

God can fight the giants. God can break the barriers, God can do what you can’t do

Joshua and Caleb accepted there were giants, but this is their proclamation:

“If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, ‘a land which flows with milk and honey” Numbers 14:8

If there is anything for the taking, take God along!

You can’t, He can.
